MEDIA NOTE | Zero Tolerance to FGM/C – 2026
Guided by its mission to protect the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of women and children, Candlelight reaffirms its strong commitment to advocate for the total abandonment of FGM/C, in line with approved Somaliland National FGM Policy and according to the 2026 theme: “Towards 2030: No End to FGM Without Sustained Commitment and Investment.”
As 2030 draws nearer, the goal of ending FGM/C stands at a critical moment. Progress achieved over the past decade is at risk as global support for gender equality and the rights of women and girls declines. Amid these pressing concerns, Candlelight extends its sincere appreciation to KinderNotHilfe (KNH) for its continued partnership in supporting community-led and rights-focused initiatives aimed at the total elimination of FGM/C in Somaliland. We also acknowledge the Social Committee of the House of Representatives for its engagement with communities through consultations on the FGM Bill.
Candlelight calls on its partners to sustain their support for FGM/C abandonment initiatives in Somaliland, as thousands of girls await decisive action. We further urge the Social Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives to advance the FGM Bill approval process, contributing to the shared vision of a Somaliland free from FGM/C by 2030. Candlelight remains fully committed to playing an active role in this process.
